Firewise
What Is It and Why Do We Need It
What Is It and Why Do We Need It
Firewise is a voluntary program sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association, for the residents of neighborhoods to join together to improve wildfire resilience.
The Firewise team in Ladera began preparation for becoming a Firewise Recognized Community in December, 2024. We formed a leadership committee, the Ladera Firewise Council in January, worked with WFPD to establish a baseline assessment of the fire risk in the neighborhood, and developed an action plan to steadily improve wildfire resilience over the coming years. We received the Certificate of Recognition from Firewise USA in April, 2025, just three days before our inaugural Firewise Fair.
Firewise is supported by California State Marshal, Cal Fire, California Department of Insurance, the Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, the Governor and the California Legislature
With wildfire, we are only as safe as the entire neighborhood
We each play a part in making our own homes safe
But ultimately, we need to work together to make the community safer
Firewise is a volunteer driven program to get residents to work together to improve wildfire safety for all of us
Sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and CalFire, Firewise offers a structured approach for communities to enhance their wildfire resilience
Ladera Firewise team is part of the Ladera Emergency Preparedness organization
Have your home inspected by WFPD
It is not as traumatic as you imagine, and you learn a lot about fire safety
Schedule the assessment with WFPD by calling (650) 851-1594 or email to info@woodsidefire.org
Get started on remediation
Talk to your neighbors
Trees and shrubs don't know about property lines, and your neighbors are your neighbors, so talk about your concerns and listen to theirs
Tell the Ladera Firewise team how much time and money you spent
Firewise is a journey, and we are at the first step
To qualify for continued Firewise recognition, we need to show that the community is contributing
After each fire safety and remediation job you do or pay someone to do, please tell us about it using this form: Firewise Related Expenditures Reporting Form
We report only community-wide cumulative totals to Firewise, once per year
